Team 800 was dispatched automatically for a gas line rupture involving a residential service line. A landscaping crew attemting to remove shrubbery around a gas meter pierced the line with a steel digging iron and ruptured the buried steel service line that was 2" below the surface. Ligonier Borough fire department shut off the gas at the curb valve and stopped the flow of gas in a short period of time. Fire department personnel checked the structure for any hazardous levels of natural gas and cleared the scene before the HAZMAT crew arrived. The gas company representative responded quickly to the scene and informed that the area is near a medium pressure line and they would instruct the homeowner on corrective actions for repair as necessary for the service line and that the contractor would be responsible. Deputy 800 responded to the scene and conducted an assessment with the fire department and gas company. The Pennsylvania OneCall system was not notified of the landscaping work being conducted.
