Operation Blue Box - Exercise
Saturday, March 8th, 2014

Team 800 participated in Operation Blue Box at the Waltz Mill Service Center SARA facility March 8, 2014. While the site is a Tier II reporting site SARA Title III facility this exercise was formulated around a radioactive evolution. A fire in a simulated radioactively-contaminated package with a release of radiologically contaminated water into the environment due to the firefighting efforts
Operation Blue Box was conducted at the Westinghouse Waltz Mill Site located at 680 Waltz Mill Road, Madison, PA 15663. Previously the site of one of the world's first commercial nuclear test reactors, Waltz Mill presently quarters more than 500 engineers, technicians, and service support personnel for Field Services. It is the Westinghouse Center of Excellence for service technology, steam generator services, reactor systems services, outage management support and training. Full-size mock-ups of steam generators and fuel assemblies and a control room simulator prepare personnel to service and operate nuclear power plants safely and efficiently. Radiological equipment, maintenance, and storage facilities are also housed at the Waltz Mill Site. In addition, the Westinghouse subsidiary, WesDyne International, is headquartered at the Waltz Mill Site.
The Waltz Mill Site is situated on 850 acres of land near Madison, Pennsylvania, approximately 30 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. (Sourced: http://www.westinghousenuclear.com/ProductLines/Nuclear_Services/waltz_mill_madison_pa.shtm)
